Overview
The Ark of Return is the United Nations Permanent Memorial to the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, standing at UN Headquarters in New York. It was designed by Rodney Leon, Architect of Record (Rodney Leon Architects), whose winning proposal James contributed to as part of the design team. Its monumental, vessel-like form gives architectural voice to memory, symbolism, and collective experience.
The Challenge
Memorial design asks how space can hold memory — how movement, light, and form invite reflection and shared experience across generations without prescribing how it is felt.
Creative Direction
Direction treated the memorial as cultural storytelling in space: a symbolic, spiritual place to acknowledge, contemplate, and pass through. Form and sequence carry the weight of history — the abstracted vessel referencing the Middle Passage — while leaving room for reflection.
